Clyfford STILL (1904-1980)

© 2019 Clyfford Still / ARS, New York / JASPAR, Tokyo E4100

Description

The huge canvas is largely occupied by expanses of vivid yellow, with blue, orange, gray and other colors running like fracture lines between them. Unprimed canvas is rawly exposed between the striations of color, seemingly in conflict with the paint and generating a sense of tension. The painting conveys the awe of America’s vast landscape and natural environment that informed Clyfford Still’s art, while the simple title consisting only of an alphanumeric code reflects the artist’s refusal to assign particular meanings or interpretations to his works. This is the only work by Still in a museum collection in Japan.
