Giraffe Mountain
ISHINO Mitsuteru (b. 1988)

Description
Mitsuteru Ishino produced ceramic works depicting various creatures when he was enrolled at the Shiga Prefectural Omi Gakuen academy between 2004 and 2007. In this work, many small nodules coat the surface of a solid, robust mountain of clay. The protrusions represent giraffes’ windswept manes, each strand flying off freely in a different direction, and the vigorous form seems to evoke the thundering of giraffes’ hooves across the dry savanna and clouds of dust rising up in their wake. Here and there globular eyes peek out, and a winsome flavor lightens the work’s imposing presence.
